As I said on ElonVille: “Pass the popcorn!”
Elon has chosen something to tackle. And this is the BIG ONE or at least one the the many super-giants. The funny part is that the COBOL code is the easiest to decompose. Bob and Jim decompose COBOL into GCC’s Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) just fine! If someone can take, for example, GCC’s AST and export it as source code in a modern language (Go, Rust, Java, etc.) they wouldn’t need an AI. Or they could use the AI on a language for which it has more experience.
But no.
Machine translation, to date, has always produced challenging source code. It is complex and hard to either read or understand. So that’s a major pitfall. We’ve seen it with the COBOL to Java work.
Then there’s the problem of everything in SSA that is not COBOL. Half of the challenge? As good a guess as I have.
Anybody know where I can get BOGO on popcorn?
